Message from the Mayor: Living with nice weather and Covid-19

By now, we are acutely aware of this Insidious virus, using proper protection, self- quarantine procedures, etc. Now into the second year, this pandemic has left a legacy of much adversity, hardship and calamity affecting virtually every family and individuals in a myriad of ways. Even today there is much we do not know about this pandemic. For instance just look at the entire gamut (so far) of symptoms that residents can get. Do we know if the vaccines are viable for the viral variants that seem to be showing up? What is known is that globally, we are by far better protected than the Pandemic of 1918 thanks to great advances in medical science. Also, our health care providers have stepped up to answer the call. We are very grateful for their work.

On March 26,2021, I received word that the Coronavirus positive numbers for the last 24 hours reached 28 in Middlesex Borough. Is this just a disturbing anomaly or a soon-to-be- concerning trend? Are we letting our guard down due to the pleasant weather in recent weeks?

Recently, the Governor announced a relaxation of the rules for gatherings. Perhaps this is the causal connection in the spike in numbers. That said, we all must stay vigilant in complying with the CDC guidelines.

I would like to share some important guidelines that may be unfamiliar to our residents.

  1. People of any age, even healthy young adults and children can get the virus.

  2. Wearing a mask under your nose leaves you unprotected and a potential carrier to others.

  3. Poorly ventilated indoor areas can cause the virus to spread.

  4. People may be infected and are asymptomatic but can be unknowing carriers of the virus.

  5. Infections may spread by exposure to microfine airborne respiratory droplets that can linger in the air for hours.

  6. The virus can affect others who are more than six feet away.

  7. The CDC does expect some reinfections although rare.

  8. When removing your mask, handle it only by the ear loops or ties.

  9. Wash and disinfect your reusable mask frequently.

  10. Be sure to monitor your health daily. Remember, fever, cough, the chills and shortness of breath are only the more common symptoms.

  11. Immediately, throw away used hand wipes ( not down the toilet please ) and tissue in a lined trash can.

  12. Please be aware that Health Professionals expect the spread of both Covid-19 and flu viruses this fall and winter.

  13. When disinfecting any surface area or room, please refer to the Environmental Protection Agency List N –Disinfectants For Coronavirus Covid -19 if you are not sure of the efficacy of the disinfectant you may be using.

  14. Please make sure that the surface is clean before using a disinfectant. Disinfectants must contact a clean surface to be effective.

  15. Clean and disinfect clothe hampers according to CDC guidelines.

  16. Refrain from touching animals or pets if infected.

  17. Frequently replace air and HEPA filters to minimize the incidence of viral spreading.

As before, we must all be vigilant and protect ourselves and others so we can finally put this pandemic to rest for good. Also, please lend a helping hand for the infirm (and our young) who may never ask for your help.

Thank you,
Mayor John L. Madden
