The Middlesex Shade Tree Commission was created with the passage of a local ordinance. It is the responsibility of the commission to maintain and protect all shade trees on Borough property, in Borough parks and along all Borough streets. All trees on a Borough street or roadway are the responsibility of the Shade Tree Commission. This commission is also responsible for the planting of new trees along Borough streets and roadways in an effort to improve and beautify our town.
Notes
Residents are advised to contact the Shade Tree Secretary at Borough Hall if they have any concerns regarding a Borough tree. The secretary can be reached at 732-356-7400, Ext. 238.
It is against the law for a resident to cut, prune, damage or disturb a Borough tree. A summons will be issued per Chapter 395 of the Borough Code and if convicted by a magistrate you can be fined a sum not to exceed $1,000, plus the cost of the replacement of a new tree, for each offense.
Recently the law regarding tree care in the state of NJ has changed, as it is now required by the state that any company performing tree care/removal operations for a resident needs to be licensed to do so. For more information, please visit the NJ Board of Tree Experts website.
For additional information about the Shade Tree Commission including origins, purpose, regulations, permits, and fees, see Chapter 395 of the Borough Code here.
