Message from Mayor Madden: A Tough Winter

Month%2C+calendar%2C+date%2C+February+22_dp-324450250_xl-2015.jpg

So far this winter has been tough going from many aspects. The weather has been less cooperative and has caused the closing of Borough Hall as well as our local businesses already hit hard in a constrained economic environment.

Snow Creativity

While driving around town I am enjoying the “snow people” and the snow structures (such as igloos) which have cropped up. It is reminiscent of an earlier time growing up when we competed with neighbors and friends about who could build the most elaborate newcomers on the block. That was indeed a time-honored tradition as we looked forward to the winter season. Due to the pandemic, sheltering at home and the remote learning seems to have energized our children into a new realm of exciting levels of snow creativity as the product of their imagination and industry reveals.

School goes hybrid with declining Covid-19 cases

Monday, February 22, 2021, Middlesex Borough School Officials have announced the resumption of hybrid classes. I am confident that this signals the start of “back to normal” as we watch the declining number of positive Covid-19 cases. Hopefully this trend will continue to ameliorate. Many of us will keep a close eye on it.

Although the lack of full time in-school participation has put a dent in the socialization process I am anticipating that teachers may observe a higher degree of critical thinking from the returning students while they were home. Familial influence may instill  enhanced situations involving problem solving, communication, leadership and self confidence skills all while at home.

Vaccine struggles

By this time, many of us know that the handling of the vaccine availability, supply and distribution has been woefully deficient. There have been a multitude of challenges up and down the food chain. Many appointments have been difficult to procure while other appointments made have been delayed or canceled.  Much of this has been due to the weather. In addition Governor Murphy announced late last week that he did not know when subsequent shipments from the Federal Vaccine Stockpile will be available for delivery to New Jersey Providers. We are aware that product is in short supply.

A Mayor’s Jurisdiction

I have received many calls and emails regarding these related issues. And like the calls that I still receive regarding unemployment issues, doctor visits or school issues, I have no jurisdiction or authority to resolve said issues. Please keep getting in touch with the respective agencies to resolve those matters.  Often times you can reach out to a higher level of authority for help.

Roadway safety

Lastly, I want to remind residents that parking on a right of way or roadway during snow or ice conditions may not only cause a significant safety problem but could lead to property damage, a summons or vehicle tow. The same goes with the quick stop to a food store and parking in a handicap spot. Please be mindful of others who may be affected by this. Our ordinances have been in place to provide safety for you and your family. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.

Please be safe.

Mayor John L. Madden
