Stress: The New Normal

Since we are all creatures of habit, typically even small, short term disruptions in our daily routine may cause feelings of uneasiness and apprehension as we conduct our lives.  The question becomes; how do we cope with now this second wave of such a devastating pandemic?  I believe that no one expected this second round to be far worse than the first cycle.

An emerging consequence of the pandemic is now being identified as P.C.S.D. (post-covid-stress disorder).  These traumatic stressors are similar to P.T.S.D. (post traumatic stress disorder).  These disorders reveal a variety of symptoms including emotional, physical and economic problems with social isolation as a common denominator.  In addition, many of us have witnessed the untimely demise of friends and love ones for the first time especially on such a wide-ranging scale and magnitude.

Coping with these new experiences

Realizing that these events are an unintended consequence of the pandemic will help prepare us for coping with these “new experiences”.

For starters, give yourself a positive image in your mind of the very best potential outcome in every aversive situation that surfaces before you.  Although easier said than done, this exercise will nibble away even incidental bouts of stress.  On the bright side you will inadvertently build your inner personal strengths.

Unfortunately, although social distancing will make people feel isolated and alone, now is the time more than ever to reach out to friends and family members for mutual support.  We all have people whom we have not been in contact with for a long time.  I could not think of a better time to reconnect with them.
